The original 25th Regiment,
North Carolina Troops was organized August 15, 1861 at Camp Patton, Asheville,
NC. It was made up of men from the counties of Buncombe, Cherokee, Clay,
Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Macon and Transylvania, making it one of the few
regiments made up entirely of Western North Carolina men, it was a true mountain
regiment. The 25th alternated between
Eastern North Carolina and Virginia, fighting in most of the battles in
Virginia and Maryland. The 25th fought with Robert E Lee's Army in battles
at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Seven Pines, The Crater and Sailor's Creek to name
a few. In June 1864 the 25th went into the trenches of
Petersburg, Virginia and remained with the Army of Northern Virginia until
the surrender at Appomattox, where only 77 were left to give their parole.
The 14th Iowa (U. S.) served in the Western Theater of the war, fighting
at Shiloh and elsewhere, suffering heavy casualties. Its finest hour was
its spirited and heroic defense of “the Hornet’s Nest” at Shiloh.
